1 Samuel 16:14–18 KJV 1900
But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
1 Samuel 16:23 KJV 1900
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Introduction.

Music is fundamental to human existence.
Whenever humans come together for any reason, music is there,- Daniel Levitin
“music is the universal language of mankind” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
“In summa, next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.... Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God.” Martin Luther
Many times as believers we focus on the negative aspects of music, like Rock and Roll. Those negative aspects are very real. Every song we sing or listen to should be examined because it has such a powerful influence in our lives. Yet music plays a hugely positive role for Christians.
Even science has proved that there is physical healing in music. (Gabby Giffords)
There are five essential parts to every Christian worship service. Prayer, scripture reading, preaching, offering and singing.
Colossians 3:16 KJV 1900
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Psalms- Scriptural songs, usually accompanied by an instrument.
Hymns- Songs everyone knows, congregational singing.
Spiritual songs- Singing in the Spirit. New songs, songs written under inspiration.
Every move of God in history was accompanied by new songs.
Psalm 33:3 KJV 1900
Sing unto him a new song; Play skilfully with a loud noise.
Psalm 144:9 KJV 1900
I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: Upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
Psalm 149:1 KJV 1900
Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, And his praise in the congregation of saints.
Jesus set the pattern
Matthew 26:30 KJV 1900
And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
You know, singing gives courage. You know that, don’t you? The soldiers, when they’re going to battle, you know what they do?
They play music and sing, and things to give them courage. And when we’re going to battle, we sing, and it gives us courage to go on. 65-1031A - Leadership
Saul’s Sickness.
Saul was depressed. We are told he had an evil spirit from the Lord.
He’d backslid and went so far away from God until the Spirit had left him, and a evil spirit took His place, come on Saul.
And Saul was all moody and in a bad humor, and kicking things around, all out of sorts like some people gets on Monday morning. So he was out of sorts all the time. Did you know that’s a evil spirit?
The doctors couldn’t do him any good. They had a lot of doctors around there, but they couldn’t help that, because it was a spiritual condition.
So one of the men had passed around and seen a few places, they said, “Well, we know where there’s a Divine healer at.” “Why, who would that be?”
Said, “Jesse’s got a son back out there, he…” Yeah, he’s a Divine healer. Sure he was. He healed by music. Amen. That’s what he did.
He had a gift of casting out evil spirits. The Holy Ghost hadn’t come in those days, so he cast them out by music, playing the words of the Lord.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside still waters.” And it disturbed the evil spirits so much that they left Saul.
Shame on you people don’t believe in string music. No wonder, evil spirits never like it. They have to get away. David cast out devils by playing on his string instrument. 55-0118 - This Great Warrior, David
Another instance.
2 Chronicles 20:21–22 KJV 1900
And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
I remember the first time in Phoenix. ....I have a record that was made during that meeting. And it’s always…When I kind of get feeling a little down, I go play this record, and it’s about scratched out.
When we heard these fine songs, I said to Brother Outlaw, “I’m glad they’re being taped, because I like to study that. I like to hear those songs and play the tape, hear the songs when you can set down.”
There’s nothing like music. You know, God heals by music. Did you know that? Uh-huh. God heals by music.
God heals by love. See? God heals by medicine. God heals by prayer. God has many ways of healing. Depends on what type that you need.
Sometimes a little love, stretched out, will just cure an old sore, an old place that’s been a grudge or something. It’ll heal it right over, just a little love, a little care.
Sometime when you feel all down, and, as we call it, a street expression, down in the dumps, see, just put on one of those tapes, that music or a record, and go to playing it.
The first thing you know, you’re patting your foot, or your hand, and it’s all over then. You’re right up and ready to go again. 63-0428 - Look
One of the marks of depression is you lose the desire to sing or to hear singing.
Psalm 137:1–4 KJV 1900
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, When we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps Upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; And they that wasted us required of us mirth, Saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the Lord’s song In a strange land?
Isaiah speaks of the millenium for the Jews.
Isaiah 35:10 KJV 1900
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, And come to Zion with songs And everlasting joy upon their heads: They shall obtain joy and gladness, And sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
They had joy when they were in the land because they knew God’s promises were there.
We are in our land now.
Ephesians 2:6 KJV 1900
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
When the Book was opened the saints sung a new song.
Saul had lost this joy due to his backslid condition.
Elisha’s bad temper.
2 Kings 3:15 KJV 1900
But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.
So they got to playing the music, the tambourine. Now, listen. If you can’t be the prophet, you can be one of the instruments, you know, that plays the music to bring the Spirit down on the prophet.
So they begin to play the tambourine and so forth, and beat the drums, and play the instruments, and all of them begin to beat and play and had a great big old song, maybe, playing of:
(Meeting in the Air)
The prophet begin to get into the Spirit. And the first thing you know, when he got in the Spirit, things begin to happen. 53-1201 - God's Provided Way
They begin to get to clapping their hands, and maybe they’re having a good time, and the Spirit of God begin to fall on the prophet.
The Spirit got on the prophet; then he begin to see things. You’ll go to seeing things when you get in the Spirit. 53-1201 - God's Provided Way
I was talking to a man not long ago that didn’t believe in music in the church. He was holding a fuss with me about it. He said, “Oh, the music belongs to the world.”
I said, “The Spirit of God didn’t come on that stewed up prophet until he got the minstrel out and begin to play a good old fashioned Holy Ghost song.
And the Spirit of God come down on the prophet.” That’s right. God doesn’t change. And if God liked music in that day, God likes music today. Yes, sir.
I tell you brother, when we get all the formal shackles shook down, and the Spirit of God in the songs again, and get back to an old place where we can have the Spirit of God moving in the place, then the prophet can see a vision, then the powers of God comes on the church.
Then they can see Divine healing. Then they can see the resurrection of Christ. Then they can see He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Well, you say, “Brother Branham, I’m not the prophet.” Well, if you ain’t the prophet, you can be one of the instruments anyhow.
Just keep playing. That’s right. You ain’t got no more than them ten, just give vent to them just as hard as you can.
If you can’t be the prophet, be part of the minstrels. Do something to bring the Spirit of the Lord down. Amen.
Prophet couldn’t do it himself, he had to have the minstrel to help him. When the prophet and the people got in harmony with God, the prophet begin to see things. 54-0304 - Elijah And Elisha
And they went and they got all the music. And they got to playing the music, some real good hymn.
And the first thing you know, when they songs returned to Zion, when the music and the children begin to sing from their heart, something takes place. The Spirit of the Lord come on the prophet.
And if a real, old fashion, godly singing, and repenting would bring the Spirit of God on the prophet then, it’ll do the same thing today.
And notice, he wanted to see the way out. And the only way out they could do, would be to have a revival.
So he had some repented sinners that come in, and the music played, and the prophet saw a vision.
And the only way you’re ever going to see your way out, is an old fashion, spiritual revival, where the hallelujahs of God is ringing from the bottom of your heart, and an old fashion, Holy Ghost sent revival hits the place.
Then you begin to see things. Then God will begin to reveal things. 56-0728 - Making The Valley Full Of Ditches
Emotions don’t last.
1 Samuel 18:6 KJV 1900
And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
1 Samuel 18:7 KJV 1900
And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.
1 Samuel 18:8 KJV 1900
And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
1 Samuel 18:9 KJV 1900
And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
1 Samuel 18:10 KJV 1900
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.
1 Samuel 18:11 KJV 1900
And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
Why didn’t the music work this time? He wasn’t just depressed this time, he was jealous. The spirit that troubled him now possessed him.
You can use music or counseling or anything else to help if you struggle with depression or anxiety, but if you don’t ever deal with your backslidden heart, it will not last.
God wants to use the music to get you in condition (atmosphere) to believe the Word.
But it’s the attitude of the people that brings the results. That’s the reason at Pentecost they had to go to an upper room and pray until the Holy Ghost came, ’cause they got in one place and one accord.
It’s the atmosphere what brings the results. You believe that? Let every man and woman in this building this morning, boy or girl, get everything from their minds but the Lord Jesus,
and believe that He’s standing present right now, and you’ll see something happening that’ll cause headlines in newspaper in the morning. That’s right. It’s atmosphere. 56-0129 - The Supernatural
And it’s the atmosphere that brings the miraculous, and wonders, and powers of God among the people. It’s the atmosphere of the people.
And when people get to a place they’re reasoning, and wondering, and stewing, and thinking, and all tore up, and don’t know where they do stand, half of them not even Scripturally taught, how can you expect the atmosphere to be right?
You can’t do it; it won’t be right. It’s got to be in one accord, one place, and settled down with one motive, one thing, then you’re going to see something happen.
(Dance music)
Put the right kind of a music on the piano, the organ, and everybody in the atmosphere that Jesus Christ is there and going to meet everything that they have need of, something will go to taking place: atmosphere.
But that’s the hardest thing there is to do. And that is to get people in that atmosphere, the atmosphere of worship, the atmosphere of believing.     56-0129 - The Supernatural
Any person that ever come into that atmosphere one time will never be satisfied nowhere else. And that’s why I believe that we should have our churches under control by the Holy Ghost,
that men and women in their work and wherever they should be, should continually desire, and they will, if they’ve ever once come into that atmosphere. 56-0129 - The Supernatural

Conclusion.

Do you believe? All things are possible. If you struggle with an evil spirit of depression, get in the atmosphere of worship, and that thing will fall.
